"After the retreat of glaciers 11,500 years ago the barren rocky landscape was gradually colonized by deciduous woodland which reached a peak some 6,000 years ago when even the uplands of Wales were covered. Around 5,000 years ago this extensive forest gradually began to diminish in size due to both natural and human influences. Situated on the edge of the Preseli Mountains, Ty Canol Wood is a rare pocket of ancient woodland which has survived. With gnarled oaks over 800 years old, rocky outcrops carpeted with moss and some 400 species of Lichen it truly is a 'Magical Wood'."
